Gun Permits

How do I obtain a gun permit?

Completed Permit to Purchase Applications are submitted to your local police department. Residents living outside city limits, or within city limits without a Police Department,  should submit their applications to the Sheriff’s Office. You must be a Minnesota Resident to obtain a Purchase Permit. There is no fee for a purchase permit.  

The sheriff shall issue a transferee permit or deny the application within 30 days of receipt of a completed application per MN Statute 624.7131 Subd 5(a).

A Permit to Purchase card is valid for one year from the date of issuance.

Carry Permits

Completed Permit to Carry Applications must be submitted to the Sheriff’s Office, in person, by the Applicant.  Carry Permits are issued by the county in which you reside and non-MN residents may apply to any county.

The Applicant must submit the following with the Permit to Carry application:

  • A certificate, affidavit, or other document that is submitted as the Applicant’s evidence of training in the safe use of a pistol that meets the requirements of Minnesota Statutes, §624.714;
  • Applicant’s current driver’s license, state identification card, or the photo page of the Applicant’s passport.

In addition to the other application materials, a person who is otherwise ineligible for a permit due to a criminal conviction but who has obtained a pardon or expungement setting aside the conviction, sealing the conviction, or otherwise restoring applicable rights, must submit a copy of the relevant order.

Fee: The Todd County Sheriff’s Office charges $75 for a new or renewal carry permit.

The Sheriff shall issue a permit or deny the application within 30 days of receipt of a completed application per MN Statute 624.714 Subd 6.  
A Permit to Carry card is valid for five years from the date of issuance.

Applications for both Carry and Purchase permits are available at the Todd County Sheriff’s Office and may be obtained Monday – Friday between 8AM and 4:30 PM.  

If you have a permit to carry, you do not need a purchase permit.
